Tori & Dean's New House...Not so Inn Love

I spent two hours ironing last night (yipee) and used the time wisely by watching the Flipping Out "meet the cast" episode and then Tori and Dean. Love the Flipping Out people. They are freaking hilarious. I know Jeff Lewis seems like a control freak OCD maniac but I think it's mostly just an act. I absolutely adore his dry as a bone sense of humor. I did find it shameless that the guy interviewing was completely gushing over Jeff. Scoping a date, are we? A little mystery might be helpful. Let's not give ourselves away so easily.
Then, I watched Tori and Dean. Tori, in a completely Sippycups type move, decides to have a housewarming party right after moving in and having a baby. (I threw a "spring fling" when BabyGirl was about 4 weeks old...granted, we had been in the house about 9 months at that point!) Not highly recommended, but it did force them to get settled pretty quick.
So...the house. I love a lot of what they did. The kitchen and sitting area around the kitchen are amazing. What a transformation! I love the juxtaposition of the modern kitchen and the more feminine red and blue chairs. I also love the mix of the traditional styling of the chairs with the bright and bold fabric and paint colors. Totally whimsical.

Tori and Dean's bedroom is fine. Very old Hollywood. I love the curtains and all the colors. I could do without the headboard. I just think they had enough fabric already and could have gone with a wooden bed. I do love all the photos on the walls, though.

The living room is interesting. I don't love the fireplace mantle, but I do love that they painted the fireplace black. LOVE the orange velvet couch with all the turquoise accents in the room. Don't love the fabric on the club chairs. Just too busy.

The dining room is cool. I love a dark dining room where guests feel as though they can sit and linger after a meal, enjoy a great glass/bottle of wine and feel sexy and grown up. This dining room fits the bill. I don't know if I love the wallpaper, but whatever. She kind of went crazy with all the wallpaper everywhere, don't you think? I know it's back in vogue and all but good grief!

The powder room. Just...NO. It's so incredibly awful. It makes me feel as though a might suffer a seizure. I agree with Tori's friend...it all needs to be torn out and redone.

Stella's room is super over the top. VERY Hollywood Diva. Don't get me wrong, I love me a pink room. I just think this pink would be better suited to a teenager. And the curtains? Are we in the early 90's? I also find it interesting that Tori has put a cabinet in the room with glass doors and dolls and such inside. Wasn't it her that was freaked out so much by her Mom's doll collection that was kept hidden behind glass doors? Hmmmm...

And finally, my FAVORITE room in the house...HAND'S DOWN. Little Liam's room. The walls are ADORABLE. I love the octopus stencils! The blue is perfect and I adore the chocolate accents and zebra rug. The monkeys scattered about are so vintagey and sweet. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

One last thing...why in the world didn't they get rid of the sliding mirror doors in the kids' rooms? They're hideous!

So, that's my take...what's yours?

I was in love with her house but agree with you. The powder bath was a little much and all of that wallpaper was overkill. Next year when wallpaper is out, she isn't going to be happy.

And the Jeff Lewis? Obsessed with him. Last years "Meet the Cast" I felt so sorry for how in love Andy Cohen was with Jeff. Same thing this year. Bless him, he made kind of a fool of himself. And Jeff knew it.

Love your blog by the way!

Seems I have some TV catching up to do! Darn these Olympics. We haven't watched much else. I must check the TIVO list and make sure both Flipping Out and Tori & Dean are listed.

I watched Tori & Dean last night too.
I do like the kitchen and sitting room. I actually really like those chairs. The bedroom I did like, but the living room is not my taste. The bathroom is a disaster! But I love Liam's room. So cute!

Tori's room was ok. Other than that, the whole house just be gutted and started over. But that's just me. I don't like clutter and lots of "things" all over the place, and that house was full of that kind of look.

We share the same taste in reality TV and interior design, apparently. I sense that with both these shows, the lead people are in on the joke & have fun with it.

Agreed that Liam's room is the best. Love the fun yet tasteful take on the teal / chocolate brown trend. Am doing the same in my own master bedroom, and might get around to posting pics once it's finished.

I really liked their house. Especially their room and the kitchen/breakfast nook. I would never have thought of RED chairs but they were awesome. I think Stellas room is over the top, but knowing how excited she was to have a little girl, I wasn't shocked. I will miss them....can't wait for the next season!

Here's my take:
The kitchen redo looks great. Love the kitchen table & chairs.
Powder room- ugh!! That would have been the 1st thing I changed!
Their bedroom is nice but I agree about the head board.
Girl's room - I think I would like the pink with out those curtains. A plantation shutter would probably make the pink livable.
Boy's room- LOVE the octopus walls.
About the sliding mirror doors - they just don't fit in, do they? But she might have kept them just to have mirrors in the room - the lazy way but I speak from experience. :)

Oh, I really enjoyed this post! I liked that their house was "different" but you are totally right on about some of their choices. You can be different without being OVER THE TOP! That pink is MUCH too bright for a little girl! She'll get nightmares!

My favorite is the bedroom. I love the mirrored dressers. The bathroom. Oh dear, not sure what they were thinking. I wish they would have shown pics of the closets. I would have loved to take a peek at her giant shoe collection.

Love the subway tile in the kitchen, hate the sink on the island. The Master Bedroom is gorgeous. I agree with you on the color of Stella's room. Way too bold for a new baby.

Missed the show, will watch when it re-airs. I think they kept the mirrors on the closet doors to visually enlarge the rooms plus mirrors must be making a big comeback on the west coast. Or perhaps they were being ironically retro? The octopi are fabulous. Delurking, love your blog. Read it everyday. Well, weekday. d

I agree the baby's room is a bit over the top. For some reason it makes me think Donna Martin's room on crack?!?

Lurker here. I love, love, love both of those shows. I am so bummed that this season of Flipping Out is over. I think Jeff is freaking hilarious! Okay, onto Tori and Dean. I totally agree with you on those 80s curtains and the dining room. It's great!
Enjoy reading your blog!

We must be sisters!! I looked at every photo before I read your comments, bingo. I agree about the fabric on the chairs, way too busy. Sliding mirrors, screams arcade, but I kinda like their headboard. Oh well, we can't agree on everything! I love them as a couple, they seem to genuinely care and love each other. But enough of the BABE!!

I basically had the same feelings on most things you said. I hate the armoire or whatever that is in their bedroom. Good Gawd.

Also, the bath? No.

The wallpaper in the dining room. Double no.

However there was a lime green sofa in there somewhere that I covet. I must have.

I've never commented but love your blog. I really like the armoire in her daughter's nursery and would love to find something similiar. Thanks for all your amazing decorating ideas! Sarah

Funny you posted about this today...I scoured the internet earlier trying to find a post on how much all of this costs. Dean is always talking about being frugal. There was not one thing frugal about this reno. I can't believe the house came together as well as it did...it sure didn't seemed organized when they were doing it!

Love Tori and Dean but this house is too eclectic for me for sure. I guess money doesn't always buy taste :) Love your blog!

Does any one know where that amazing vintage brown palm/bamboo wallpaper in the dining room came from? I MUST have it! Very retro tropical deco.

I am shocked that Liams room is the only room I like! I loved how they did the Inn!

Poor Stella's gonna have fucking nightmares in that room. I agree, I love me a pink room, but that's just sherbert throw-up. Love Tori and Dean, not so in love with the house.

I really liked Tori & Dean's house. I would have to say that the master bedroom and the kitchen are my favorite rooms though. Although I can honestly say that I like all the rooms, I can also say that it is a bit over the top for my lifestyle.

As for Flipping Out, I have just recently found that show and it is truly a hoot. I think Jeff is extremely talented but quite a character.

I like all the large photographs, the dining room and Liam's room. Of course I like the backyard with the pool. Didn't care so much for the powder room or nursery.
